What happened
An attacker exploited a VM-level atomicity issue in MultiversX that allowed invalid state changes to occur because of an order-of-operations error in edge cases. Validators paused network progression to contain the incident. MultiversX prepared a protocol correction and coordinated hard-fork recovery from a known-good checkpoint. A September 23 restart attempt failed because insufficient Shard 1 validators synchronized and transitioned into the new epoch within the activation window, so the mainnet remained paused while recovery software was updated for another restart attempt
