What happened
Between March-April 2016, ShapeShift suffered three separate thefts totaling ~$230K. An employee stole $130K in mid-March, then after dismissal sold security credentials to external hackers who stole an additional $100K (154 BTC, 5,800 ETH, 1,900 LTC). No customer funds were lost as ShapeShift used a non-custodial architecture.
