What happened
DeFiChain’s atomic swap implementation contained a fee-denomination vulnerability that allowed attackers to substitute BTC for DFI while preserving the numerical fee amount. This caused the protocol to pay disproportionately large fees in BTC-denominated assets, introducing unbacked dBTC into circulation. The vulnerability existed from approximately June 2021 and was discovered on January 2, 2022.
